Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick, along with Confession, is one of the Sacraments of Healing.

During his ministry, Jesus showed particular compassion for those who were ill. His healing of people was not just physical, but spiritual.  The Church has continued the tradition of asking God to heal those who are sick and to bring them comfort. For some people, this means a recovery to full health. For others, it means finding the strength and courage to cope with their illness.

Through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the sick, people receive forgiveness  and comfort in their suffering. Their pain is united with that of Jesus on the Cross. The Sacrament is also a reminder to the wider community that we called by God to care in a particular way for those who are sick.

The Oil of the Sick is blessed by the Archbishop at the Chrism Mass in the Pro-Cathedral on Holy Thursday morning.   This Oil is then used by our priests to anoint those who are seriously ill, injured or the elderly.

If you or a relative would like to receive the Sacrament, please contact the Parish Office.
